Physiotherapy and Acupuncture: The Perfect Pain Relief Pair

Tips May 17, 2017

Chronic pain is tough to deal with. The smallest things, like standing up from a chair or playing with your kids or grandkids, become a constant struggle between daily life and escaping the pain. Treatment options work a little differently from each other, which is why sometimes a combined approach is most successful. Physiotherapy (also known as Physical Therapy) and Acupuncture are two well-known pain treatments. While they are very different in practice, they work well together for managing chronic pain.

Physiotherapy

With physiotherapy, the focus is on rehabilitation and restoring mobility. It was initially introduced to Canada as a treatment for soldiers returning from the front lines of World War I. More recently, it has shown promising results for people who suffer from chronic pain. By building strength and mobility together, patients often find that they can perform activities they once thought they would never do again.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, on the other hand, is a traditional Chinese treatment that reorients the energy (or “qi”) of our bodies to relieve pain. A trained acupuncturist will read the energy lines of the body, then use a combination of thin needles, pressure, and heat to shift the qi and relieve pain. Studies have shown that acupuncture truly relieves pain. Many patients report being more satisfied with this treatment than other approaches.

Putting them Together to Heal

These two approaches to pain treatment, while very different from each other, do offer a holistic treatment plan when combined. Physical therapy builds up the body’s strength, restoring mobility and reducing pain to allow a patient a better quality of life. Acupuncture adds to that foundation by releasing endorphins, which in turn reduce the effects of migraines, osteoarthritis, neck, back, and knee pain. Applied together, they make a patient feel better and stronger, increasing the chances of recovery.
