Foot Pain: Types and Treatment

Tips November 5, 2017

Our feet play an important role by carrying us from place to place. However, most of us do not care for our feet until we experience pain. Severe or chronic pain limits our activities and lifestyle.

Areas of Pain

The foot is a complex anatomical structure constructed of a network of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Because feet bear a body’s weight, they are prone to pain and injury. Discomfort may occur in certain areas of the foot:

  • Heels
  • Soles
  • Arches
  • Toes

Although most mild foot pain responds to home treatment, it may take a couple of days to become tolerable. Severe foot pain requires a doctor’s evaluation, especially when it is associated with injury.

Foot Conditions

Here are some common conditions that affect the foot:

Foot Pain: Types and Treatment

  • Plantar Fasciitis - This is a painful foot condition that usually manifests itself in the heels. Plantar fasciitis is a somewhat common affliction among middle-aged men and women. The plantar fascia (a thick band of connective tissues that stretches over the heel bone) acts as a shock absorber when a person is standing, walking, and running. Inflammation creates pain and difficulty when pressure is placed on the foot/heel.
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome - A person suffering from this problem usually experiences burning, shooting, and tingling pain and/or numbness that radiates from the ankle into the sole and arch of the foot. Tarsal syndrome is caused by pinched nerve or nerve entrapment.
  • Tendonitis - When tendons in the foot become overstretched or overused, tendonitis can result. Tendonitis is inflammation which often occurs when foot tendons are overused or overstretched. Pain, stiffness, and swelling are among the main symptoms. If you have tendonitis, pain is frequently experienced when waking and walking in the morning.
  • Morton Neuroma - This nerve problem is caused by wearing tight shoes and overpronation, resulting in shooting pain between the toes.
  • Metatarsalgia - Metatarsalgia often presents itself with sharp pain in the metatarsal bones. It can be described like the feeling of stepping on a stone. Walking barefoot can worsen the condition, especially if you have stress fractures in your metatarsal. Excess weight may also put more pressure on the bone.

How to Ease Foot Pain

Foot pain can interfere with daily activities. However, there are a few home treatments that may help provide relief:

  • Elevation (prop your foot at a 45 degree angle on pillows or rolled towels and relax for at least 15-20 minutes)
  • Massage
  • Over-the-counter pain medication
  • Insoles
  • Orthotics
  • Soaking in hot and cold water
  • Warm, salt water soaks
